Puberty in Girls

Girls start puberty at about the age of 10 or 11. Their growth spurt starts earlier than that of boys, and girls have usually attained their adult height by about the age of 16.

Menstruation does not begin until towards the end of the growth period, when the girl has reached an optimum body weight.

Ovulation, when reproduction can occur, starts when a regular menstrual cycle is established.

Hormones in girls

Triggered by gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland releases follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH)

Physical changes in girls

Budding of the breasts is often the first sign of puberty. This is followed by the growth of pubic and underarm hair, and by menstruation (which may be irregular at first). Fat is deposited around the hips.
