How Hormones WorkHormones are made up of molecules derived from steroids, proteins or tyrosine (an amino acid). They become active only when bound to a specific receptor on or inside a target cell. Hormones derived from proteins bind to receptors on the outside of the cell membrane; steroid and tyrosine hormones pass inside the cell and bind to receptors in the cytoplasm or the nucleus.
